In japan, tunnnneeeee! on February 1, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I’ve been in Japan for going on two weeks and haven’t been listening to any tunes, humming songs, rapping or singing a verse here, or a verse there, but not actually listening to music, which is well….

Not me, as I listen to music, morning, afternoon, and night. There’s no time when there isn’t music playing in my life. I bought some portable speakers with me to play in rooms and spaces where there is no hi-fi, just plug in ipod, and let the good tunes roll. But not wanting to be anti-social in a dorm, I’ve not used it at all.

So on embarking for a ride out to Ichikawa/Chiba to see a fixed bike shop out there called Depot Cycle & Recycle, I broke out the ipod, the sound cancelling headphones and the playlist made in Gilles Peterson’s image. Since Gilles loves Japan as much as he loves Brazil, and because the club he used to love playing at is no longer running. It seemed like the done thing to play music that I wouldn’t have known about if it hadn’t been for his Worldwide radio show

So listening to the big man’s tunes whilst in Tokyo seemed like the right thing to do, and an opportunity not to be missed. So find below some of the tracks played on my way through the urban sprawl that is Tokyo, they are in no particular order.

  1. Dude you have to try and locate some U.F.O. (United Future Organization) Japanese buddies of Giles that do a sweet take on post modern Bossanova. Personal favorite is “Tears of Gratitude” but their version of “Berimbau” is pretty good too. Have fun!

Have you been to Tokyo Hands? LOVE THAT SHOP!
